After watching Anthropic&#x27;s recent postmortem (anthropic.com&#x2F;engineering&#x2F;april-23-postmortem), I&#x27;ve been thinking about the way I approach Claude Code differently. They lowered default reasoning effort to fix latency, called it the wrong tradeoff, and reverted under public scrutiny. The reverts are good but they don&#x27;t change the underlying equation I&#x27;d been ignoring.The fact is we potentially have a team of engineers at our disposal now. Token cost is a real cost, but I couldn&#x27;t hire my own engineer for any of the personal work I&#x27;m doing. Apply that lens to token usage and the approach shifts. It stops being about the cost ceiling and becomes a cost&#x2F;output&#x2F;quality view, the same way I&#x27;d think about hiring decisions on a real team.Four places I now think about: model, configuration, prompting, agents.On model. Opus is still the strongest for critical decisions and architectural reasoning. Sonnet is usually good enough for coding and simple repetitive tasks. I use the right model for the work. If I cheap out, I can&#x27;t expect quality.On configuration. &#x2F;effort runs from low to max. Opus 4.7&#x27;s default is xhigh. I set the level to fit the work. A quick edit doesn&#x27;t need max, an architectural decision does. The cheapest move and the one I&#x27;d been skipping.On prompting: three patterns I find most effective.1. &quot;Ask questions if unsure.&quot; Without this I&#x27;m not giving the model an out, which closes off solutions even when there&#x27;s no clean answer and tradeoffs need to be surfaced.2. &quot;Time and cost are not factors here. Without going into detail as this is a whole post in itself, the pattern that works for me is using agents to separate concerns. One agent does spec review against the code (code is source of truth). A separate agent does code review after implementation.Engineering and product teams have always balanced speed to market with cost and quality. AI is no different. The difference is which levers I choose. Spend the budget on effort deliberately, and the work comes back at the level I want.

When I look at old photos I can&#x27;t really tell the difference between photos from my iPhone 7 and my iPhone 15 or whatever (I don&#x27;t even know the model).I bought a used M1 Max for $950 and I&#x27;m still using that, and I feel like this will work for me for another 3-5 years. I still use my beefy gaming&#x2F;workstation with a 5950x and 128gb ram. I used to drop like $5k on a new mac..I used to have Teslas and cool cars, I sold them all and just walk. I bought better shoes instead.My last home was filled with smart home tech and other stuff, now I live in a completely analog old home which is nice (and much smaller!).The only subscriptions I have now are Prime and Youtube.I&#x27;ve tinkered enough with AI with 1b plus tokens spent to build loads of cool stuff, but if I&#x27;m being totally honest I feel like I now know its limitations and benefits. I don&#x27;t really find it that interesting anymore because it sucks ass at image generation (what I actually want, regardless of # of iterations and time spent), reliably organizing notes, and stuff like that. I&#x27;ve been working on a hosted Fossil SCM service for a few months and I genuinely don&#x27;t know if it&#x27;s a good idea. The &quot;We need a federation of forges&quot; thread on the front page today made me think it&#x27;s worth posting.What I&#x27;m building: a hosted home for Fossil repos. Same onramp feel as a code host, but each project is a single self-contained SQLite file you can clone, email, or walk away with. The open source omnibus (Django + Postgres + Redis + Caddy + Litestream-to-S3) is at fossilrepo.io. The hosted version will be in private beta soon.My rough thesis:
1. Fossil is already federated by design. Every clone is the entire project: issues, wiki, forum, history, code. That&#x27;s the federation discussion happening on the front page right now, just with a 15+ year-old tool the SQLite project itself uses. If fossil clone works between any two hosts, lock-in basically dies.2. AI agents need integrated context. A Fossil repo is one queryable SQLite file. An agent reads code + tickets + wiki + history with SELECT * instead of 47-odd GraphQL calls. RAG and MCP setups become trivial. Also has a cli tool thats super easy to use.3. Small-but-serious teams are underserved. Git+GitHub won the macro market and that&#x27;s not changing. But the 1-50 person team where the spec, the tickets, the wiki, and the code all belong in the same place... the integrated model is just better&#x2F;easier.Things I&#x27;m worried about: 
- Network effect — a repo isn&#x27;t very useful if nobody else can find it
- Inertia — Git muscle memory is hard to break
- Codeberg &#x2F; Forgejo &#x2F; Gitea are all credible

If coding gets faster, where should architecture happen?A feature works. The tests pass. The PR is not huge. The business wants to test it live. Nobody wants to block value delivery because of an architecture concern that may sound abstract in the moment.But this seems to be getting harder.AI-assisted development, vibe coding, internal tooling, and better frameworks all reduce the friction of producing code. That is useful. Teams can prototype faster and ship experiments sooner.The problem is that architectural judgment has not become equally cheap.The code may work and still make the system worse: duplicated logic, unclear ownership, inconsistent patterns, security gaps, bad boundaries, one-off components that should have been reusable, or features that are hard to remove later.One option is to force more architecture into code review. But then PRs become slow, frustrating, and full of design debates that are difficult to resolve after the code already exists.Another option is to merge faster, while making the architecture feedback loop after merge much more explicit. Architecture should already be continuous, but faster code creation may require stronger post-merge mechanisms: reviewing what changed at the system level, checking reuse opportunities, reassessing security assumptions, scheduling refactors, keeping features behind flags, and being willing to disable or rewrite things.That only works if “refactor later” is an actual process, not a wish.Has your team changed how it handles architecture as code has become easier to produce? I thought I&#x27;d relate an incredibly broken tech stack story, and its human consequences, to HN today.I used to have One Medical access through work, years ago, it was perfectly fine quality care, and then I stopped using it.I recently needed to find a replacement primary care and decided to try them again.Unfortunately, after a few weeks of initial care transfer and appointments, my account is now in a Sisyphean nightmare state, where it thinks I have an expired membership expiring in the future (September 2026), and as a result, errors out on any attempt to update my membership status.Attempting to contact their support has been an exercise in repeatedly being hung up on when attempting to put me on hold to escalate, and&#x2F;or having their staff decide that if they repeat the instructions enough times it&#x27;ll work.You cannot make a second account, because they notice the duplicated personal data and insist on deduplicating it before providing you care, which appears to be how we got into this nightmare state in the first place.Amazon support says they can&#x27;t do anything because it&#x27;s a One Medical problem, One Medical support says they can&#x27;t do anything because they have no power to do anything.Now I&#x27;m going to need to find another medical provider on extremely short notice, because I&#x27;ve been trying for two weeks to try and get this resolved with them and failing, and I am going to run out of some monthly medication renewals if I don&#x27;t.
